The
purpose of this reference sheet is to provide a list of questions
you should ask a broadband internet provider such as a DSL company,
cable modem company, or other broadband providers for use with a
digital video recorder.
Some of these questions may appear to be a bit technical but is
necessary to ensuring that a correct Internet provider is used.
Please contact ESLI if you have any questions. Also, be sure to tell
your provider that you are installing a digital video recorder with
Internet connection for additional help.
1. Ask for
Static IP.
A Static IP is needed and not a Dynamic IP. As static IP address has
a constant address (i.e. 192.168.4.00) and never changes. A Dynamic
IP address will rotate a IP address. In order to view your DVR
remotely you need a constant IP address to logon.
2. In the case of using cable, ask the provider if it is OK to run
services. Many times if using a cable modem provider the
Authorized Usage Policy
will prohibit the use of services or
remote access to a machine
3. Ask if the connection will be using
NAT or will a computer be
assigned a
Public IP?
4. If a router is used what is the router name , address and
model? Will the provider manage the
router? If ports need to be
forwarder who will
do this?
